WTO Members Hold First Informal Dialogue on "Plastic Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade" in 2022
On March 30, 2022, the "Plastic Pollution and Environmentally Sustainable Plastics Trade" (IDP) advocates held their first informal dialogue in 2022. The meeting was chaired by Ecuadorian Ambassador Jose Valencia and attended by more than 130 representatives from WTO members, international organizations, NGOs and academia.
Ambassador Li Chenggang attended the meeting and delivered a speech, pointing out the progress made by the international community in tackling plastic pollution since the last informal dialogue, affirming the work carried out by the IDP during the same period, calling on more members to actively participate, and jointly promote the consensus reached in the ministerial statement into practical action plan.
Representatives of the WTO Secretariat, UNEP, UNCTAD, the Trade Environment and Sustainable Forum and other institutions made speeches successively, sharing their respective work and suggestions for the next step of the IDP.
The EU and the Philippines introduced their experience and practices in dealing with plastic pollution, and several WTO members actively spoke, introducing their own practices and putting forward relevant opinions and suggestions.
