Stora Enso FDCA pilot plant has been completed
On November 3, the construction of the FDCA pilot plant of Stora Enso, a paper giant headquartered in Finland, was announced to be completed, and the commissioning work was progressing smoothly. The initial production will start at the end of 2022. After that, things will soon turn to regular production of FDCA and production of PEF with partners. Three years ago, on December 10, 2019, Stora Enso announced that it would invest 9 million euros to set up a pilot project in Langerbrugge Paper Mill in Belgium. Langerbrugge Paper Mill provided space and infrastructure for the facility, which was to be constructed in the second half of 2020. It was originally planned to be completed in the first quarter of 2021.
FDCA is the key monomer of biological barrier material PEF. In addition to being renewable, the barrier, mechanical and thermal properties of PEF also bring new packaging opportunities, such as small liquid containers for soft drinks, fruit juices and other beverages.
