Another Emirate of the United Arab Emirates bans disposable plastic bags

Umm Al Quwain will ban the use of disposable plastics from January 1, 2023.According to the decision of the Executive Council of the Emirate of Umm Qavan, all bags must be biodegradable, multipurpose or made of paper or fabric.

Umm Qavan is one of the seven emirates of the United Arab Emirates. The Umgavan ban was issued after similar bans were imposed in Abu Dhabi, Dubai and Sharjah.

In Abu Dhabi, the ban on disposable plastics will come into effect on June 1, 2022, while in Dubai, retailers will charge 25 Phil per bag from July 1, 2022.

Starting next year, Umgavan outlets must charge an additional 25 Phil for each plastic bag used by customers. This is in preparation for the UAE's comprehensive ban on disposable plastic bags.
